Role of Biofertilizers in Enhancing Sustainable Crop Production: A Comprehensive Analysis of Microbial Solutions for Modern Agriculture
Abstract
The increasing global demand for food production coupled with environmental concerns over chemical fertilizer usage has intensified interest in biofertilizers as sustainable alternatives. Biofertilizers, comprising living microorganisms that enhance plant nutrition through biological processes, offer promising solutions for sustainable agriculture. This comprehensive review examines the role of biofertilizers in crop production, analyzing their mechanisms of action, types, benefits, limitations, and potential for widespread adoption. The study reveals that biofertilizers can significantly improve soil health, enhance nutrient availability, and increase crop yields while reducing environmental impacts. However, challenges including inconsistent performance, storage limitations, and farmer awareness remain barriers to large-scale implementation. The integration of biofertilizers with conventional farming practices presents opportunities for developing more sustainable agricultural systems that balance productivity with environmental stewardship.
