Precision Agriculture Using IoT and Remote Sensing: Enhancing Productivity and Resource Efficiency
Abstract
Precision agriculture represents a paradigm shift in farming practices, leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and remote sensing capabilities to optimize agricultural productivity while minimizing resource consumption and environmental impact. This technology-driven approach enables farmers to make data-informed decisions about crop management, irrigation, fertilization, and pest control by providing real-time monitoring and analysis of field conditions. The integration of IoT sensors, satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and advanced analytics has demonstrated significant improvements in crop yields, water use efficiency, and input optimization. Studies indicate that precision agriculture adoption can increase yields by 10-30% while reducing water consumption by 20-40% and fertilizer use by 15-25%. This research article examines the current state of precision agriculture technologies, their applications across different farming systems, economic benefits, and challenges in implementation. The analysis reveals that while initial investment costs remain high, the long-term benefits of precision agriculture make it a crucial component of sustainable agricultural intensification needed to meet growing global food demands.
